Controller Ratings

AS PER VATSIM'S GLOBAL RATINGS POLICY (GRP)

RATINGS OVERVIEW

  • S1 - Tower trainee: You will start by controlling Delivery (_DEL) and Ground (_GND). A delivery controller has quite and important job, it must ensure that the pilot's flightplan follows a correct route at a correct flightlevel and assign the flight a squawk (a unique 4-digit code which will be used later by other controllers to identify the aircraft on the radar screen).
  • S2 - Tower controller: With this rating you will be able to control up to Tower (_TWR). Tower controllers handle VFR traffics within the CTR, which is usually a 5nm (≈9km) radius circle round an airport covering up to 3000ft above ground level. With this rating, you'll also be able to 'control' IFR aircraft arriving at your field. You will be in charge of keeping enough separation between them on the localizer after the overlying approach controller has sequenced them for approach.
  • S3 - TMA controller: This rating will show you how important playing Tetris has actually been in your life. You will be able to control Approach (_APP) and/or Departure (_DEP). Basically, the job of an approach controller consists on getting the aircraft into and out of an airport as quickly, safely and orderly as possible. This normally involves getting the airplanes as close as possible one behind the other, allowing for an efficient use of space and time.
  • C1 - Enroute controller: This is the highest rating which will allow to provide ATC services achievable (_CTR). Its main job is to keep an ordered and safe flow of traffic for enroute aircraft. This includes issuing initial descent clearances, before handing them over to neighbouring approach controllers and coordinating climb clearances before receiving them.

DISTINCTIVE RATINGS

NOTE THAT THESE RATINGS ARE NOT HIGHER THAN THE C1 RATING, AND ARE ONLY TO GIVE RECOGNITION OF SENIORITY, PERFORMANCE OR ANY ADDITIONAL ROLE BEYOND THAT OF A C1.
